Professor Rett Ludwikowskidate: 2026-02-12
We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Emeritus Rett R. Ludwikowski, who died peacefully on February 12, 2026.
Born in Skawina, Poland, Professor Ludwikowski earned doctoral degrees in law and in legal and political theory from the Jagiellonian University, where he began his distinguished academic career. Following the imposition of martial law in Poland, he immigrated to the United States in 1982, continuing his scholarly work while remaining deeply committed to the future of a free and democratic Poland.
In 1984, he joined the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America, where he taught for four decades. A prolific scholar and two-time Fulbright recipient, he authored more than 30 books and numerous articles on constitutional law, international trade, and political thought, earning international recognition as a leading authority in his field. Professor Ludwikowski served as the director of the Comparative and International Law Institute since its inception in 1985 through 2020. From 2001 to 2003 he was the managing editor of Comparative Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, a multi-volume publication of Oceana Publications, Inc.
Legacy of Professor Ludwikowski extends beyond his academic achievements. He was an effective bridge-builder between Poland and the United States. When Poland reclaimed its sovereignty and began the process of rebuilding democratic institutions, Professor Ludwikowski founded academic exchange programs connecting American and Polish students, scholars, and legal practitioners. He created a partnerships between the Catholic University of America and his old alma mater, Jagiellonian University. Generations of students on both sides of the Atlantic benefited from this exchange program and his vision and dedication.
He was a honorary member of the Jagiellonian Law Society. Professor Ludwikowski will be remembered as an outstanding scholar, a dedicated mentor, and a great friend of the JLS.
